Legacy of Learning: "Ordinary Soldiers" moderated by COL Jody Prescott (Ret.) and COL Brian Ketz '98

Webinar description:  Fall 2020 will mark the seventh year the Ordinary Soldiers lesson plan has been used by MS-IV cadets in the Norwich Army R.O.T.C. battalion to discuss the interplay of ethics, law, and leadership.  The lesson plan is the product of a multidisciplinary team at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and West Point’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.  It uses a case study of a reserve Wehrmacht infantry battalion in German-occupied Belarus in early October 1941. 

Presenter Bios:
COL (Ret.) Jody M. Prescott
Jody returned home to Vermont after serving 25 years as an active-duty Army judge advocate.  He works as a federal attorney in the areas of commercial litigation and environmental law.  He also been a lecturer at UVM since 2012, teaching environmental law, energy law & climate change, and cybersecurity law & policy.  He served as an appellate attorney; senior defense counsel and international claims chief in Germany; deputy and then staff judge advocate for U.S. Army Alaska; and legal observer/trainer at the Joint Warfare Centre in Norway.  His final operational assignment was as the Chief Legal Advisor, Kabul, Afghanistan, with ISAF, 2008-2009.  He was an assistant professor at the Army Command & General Staff College, 2000-2003, and at West Point teaching constitutional law, 2009-2011.  His publications include Armed Conflict Women and Climate Change (2018) and Ordinary Soldiers: A Case Study in Ethics, Law and Leadership (2014).

COL Brian J. Ketz:
Colonel Ketz enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1992 before accepting a Green to Gold scholarship to Norwich University in 1994. Colonel Ketz was commissioned in May 1998 through ROTC as a branch-detailed Armor Officer. He transferred to the Finance Corps and commanded Alpha Detachment, 4th Finance Battalion and later Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 175th Finance Command, Yongsan, Korea. In 2011, Colonel Ketz was selected as an interagency fellow assigned to the Department of Labor as the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Veterans’ Employment Training Service for 3 years. He returned to Germany to command the 16th Special Troops Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade and later becoming the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Brigade. Colonel Ketz is currently attending the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy and following graduation in June he will assume duties as the Executive Officer for the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Financial Management & Comptroller). He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Business Management from Norwich University and Master of Business Administration from Seattle University. Colonel Ketz has deployed several times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
