Book Talk: "The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street and Slavery before the Civil War" (2020) by Dr. Jon Wells
The talk is sponsored by the Norwich Humanities Initiative.

Tuesday, February 2, 2021 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Time Zone: America/New_York
Local Time: Tuesday, February 2, 2021 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

In the early 19th Century during the years leading up to the Civil War, Black residents – including young children – were at risk of being kidnapped and illegally sold into slavery, even if they had been born free. Children were snatched off the streets and even from school classrooms in front of their classmates' eyes, never to be seen again. The kidnapping happened repeatedly despite the fact that slavery had been officially outlawed in New York in 1827. Historian Dr. Jon Wells weaves this harrowing, heart-breaking, real-life tale of a group of corrupt police, lawyers, and judges nicknamed "The Kidnapping Club"; and the people and families they harmed.

About the author: Jon Wells is Professor of History in the RC, DAAS, and History at the University of Michigan and the author of several books on nineteenth-century America, including, most recently, Blind no More: African American Resistance, Free-Soil Politics, and the Coming of the Civil War (2019) and The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War (2020). His next book is about the backlash against the Emancipation Proclamation in the Civil War North."
