     Gerard T. LaVarnway is Professor of Mathematics at Norwich University. He received a BS in Secondary Education – Mathematics and Science, cum laude from Norwich University in 1978.

He received an MS in Mathematics in 1983 from the University of Vermont. Dr. LaVarnway has been the recipient of eight consecutive US Navy - American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Summer Faculty Research Fellowships. From 1984 – 1991, Dr. LaVarnway pursued applied research at the Naval Ocean Systems Center in San Diego, CA (the primary research facility for the Pacific Fleet). Gerard was involved with the development of classification algorithms for the identification of radar and remote tracking of ships at sea.

Professor LaVarnway returned to graduate school at the University of Vermont and completed his PhD. in Mathematical Sciences specializing in analysis, specifically Besicovitch almost periodic functions in 1999. Professor LaVarnway has been a full-time member of the faculty at Norwich University since 1983.

During his 38 years of service to Norwich University, Dr. LaVarnway published several classified technical documents in the area of ocean surveillance. His research interests include classification algorithms, ocean surveillance and cryptography. Professor LaVarnway, has 15 publications, including 9 classified SECRET publications for the Office of Naval Research. In addition, he has presented numerous scholarly and professional presentations at regional and national meetings. Gerard has mentored 12 undergraduate research projects (Senior Seminar).

Gerard has been a valued university citizen, most notably serving 14 consecutive years on the Faculty Senate, including 6 years as Chair (2005-2011); 5 years as Vice-Chair (2001-2005) and 3 years as the Senator from the College of Mathematics and Sciences (1999-2001). Gerard served on over 25 university standing committees. Gerard served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics for seven years (2006-2013). Professor LaVarnway was the recipient of the COSM Service Award in 2004, 2 Category One Charles A. Dana Awards (2002,2007), The Board of Fellows Faculty Development Prize (2000-2001).
