CITIZENS & SOLDIERS:

The First 200 Years of Norwich University

Own a part of Norwich University’s Bicentennial!

Citizens and SoldiersFor 200 years, Norwich University has been educating citizen soldiers to serve, defend, and build the republic, as both uniformed and civilian leaders. Here, for the first time, the 200-year legacy of this venerable institution is presented in a single volume, highlighting the tremendous contributions of Norwich-educated leaders to our military, our nation, and the world.

New York Times bestselling author Alex Kershaw brings this remarkable story to life in a beautifully written and illustrated book on the history and heritage of the nation’s oldest private military college. From its revolutionary beginnings to its rise to prominence on the world stage, the evolution of Norwich University closely parallels that of our nation. Captain Partridge’s mission to create “moral, patriotic, efficient, and useful citizens,” and his radical ideas about educating citizens and soldiers through an experience-based curriculum, have withstood the test of time. Through vivid storytelling, stirring photographs, and captivating illustrations, Kershaw’s Citizens & Soldiers captures the essence of the timeless Norwich ethos.

"I stayed up most of the night reading this very informative and enlightening draft of our 200-year journey.  To say I am excited and in awe of Kershaw’s talent would be an understatement."  -- GEN Gordon R. Sullivan USA (Ret.) ‘59

"The history is handsomely bound and graphically appealing. More important, the narrative and side boxes will engage and inform a wide range of readers about the unique role of Norwich in the history of higher education. This commendable work will become, I think, one of the most valuable and lasting results of the bicentennial celebration."  -- Professor Gary Lord

"By the time Norwich's cadets awoke the next day, the Civil War had begun ... Thus began a war that would pit state against state, brother against brother, and Norwich alumni against each other.
Few universities can claim that their alumni have played as central a role in American history as Norwich University. Even fewer can claim that their ranks have sacrificed more lives and limbs in service of their country. In 2015, New York Times best-selling author and UK native Alex Kershaw was commissioned to pen this history of the nation's first private military college to commemorate its 2019 bicentennial. Though this weighty, linen-bound tome probably won't earn Kershaw his fourth appearance on that best-seller list, its blend of prose, historical photos and illustrated time lines will greatly interest historians and NU alums alike. As Kershaw told alumni magazine the Norwich Record, "We often forget there's a lot of people — the most important people — the ones who glue us together as a society, [who] are the ones that serve us. Without them, we would have nothing." -- Seven Days VT Book Review
