The Bicentennial Stairs Project—About the Selection Committee

Alan Cook ’63

Alan W. Cook is a graduate of Norwich, Class of 1963, and Boston University School of Law. He is a retired Vermont Superior Court Judge. He also served on active duty in the U.S. Army as a Judge Advocate Officer and retired as a Colonel in the Army Reserve. He served on numerous State boards and commissions. He is a past President Norwich University Alumni Association and was recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Amber Countis

Amber W. Countis is the Senior Director of Advancement Services at Norwich University. She has responsibility for the Prospect Research and Management, Advancement Services, and Donor Relations and Stewardship teams. She joined the Norwich development office in October 2012. She was previously Director of Prospect Development and Research at Tufts University (2005 to 2012) during its successful $1.2 billion Beyond Boundaries campaign. She is a graduate of Tulane University with a BA in Political Science and Environmental Studies, and earned a certificate in Management of Nonprofit Organizations and a master of Public Policy from Tufts University. Since 2013, she has served as International Vice President on the Executive Board of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity and currently is Chair of the Fraternity’s Advancement and Engagement Committee. She is a member of Apra’s curriculum planning committee for the 2018 Prospect Development conference in Pittsburgh. She is a former President and board member for the Central Vermont Humane Society.

Clarke Haywood ’12

C.T. Haywood is a 2012 graduate of Norwich. He majored in History and Education. He has supported Norwich’s historical initiatives as a volunteer on the Bicentennial Stairs Committee. He has served the Sullivan Museum’s oral history program and as an intern. As an intern, he wrote the complete history of the Corps dress and service uniform. He also authored several features for the Norwich Record. Haywood has worked in the education field for four years. He currently works for the National Life Group as a case manager. He is the author of An American Original, a memoir of a Revolutionary War veteran with PTSD.

Henry Lutz ’93

Colonel Henry W. Lutz III graduated from Norwich University in 1993 with a BA in History and International Studies. He also has advanced degrees from Marine Corps University and National Defense University. Colonel Lutz has served as a Marine Corps officer for over 25 years with multiple overseas assignments as well as combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He is currently assigned as the Chief of Staff, 3d Marine Logistics Group. Colonel Lutz has been an active member in multiple NU clubs and is a Garrison Associates Member of the Partridge Society.

Tony Maida ’77

Tony Maida is a 1977 graduate of Norwich University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Commissioned in the US Air Force, he entered active duty immediately following graduation. He retired in 2005 as a Colonel. In 2006, he joined Jacobs Engineering and as a Principal in this firm, is currently working as a senior level manager responsible for client programs including fiduciary control and relationship development. He serves as the NU’77 Class Agent from 1990 to the present; Norwich Ambassador from 2009 to the present, representing Norwich at college fairs and helping students and alumni network for jobs; Club President, Norwich Club of DC (2008-2012); Club President, Norwich Club of Tampa (2012 – 2016); Club President, Norwich Club of Western North Carolina (2017 – Present), a member of the NUAA Board of Directors (2009-2017). He is a member of the Partridge Society.

Lenore Schmidt ’93 & ’95

Lenore is a Lead Construction Administrator for Forest City Reality Trust and has been with the company for 17 years. She has worked on multiple development projects throughout the United States. She is in the greater Washington, DC, area. Prior to joining Forest City, she worked for Parsons Brinkerhoff on the Central Artery Tunnel Project in Boston, MA for 5 years. Lenore received a BS in Business Administration Management & Accounting from Norwich University in 1993 and a BS in Civil Engineering from Norwich University 1995.

Todd Smith ’92

Todd E. Smith, P.E., graduated from Norwich University in 1993. He is a former Marine NCO and is currently a consulting engineer, working in buildings systems and infrastructure design and construction in Charleston, SC. Todd is a native Vermonter, who has unique WWII- related collections: signed WWII escape maps and WWII escape compasses.

Michael Popowski

Michael Popowski is Stairs Committee Chairman. He is a Northfield attorney who has been counsel to Norwich University since 1984. He was commissioned via Army ROTC from Georgetown University and served in Vietnam. He has a long association with Norwich, beginning with his father, a 1934 graduate and former Commander of Cadets. He is active in his community and has served on boards for the State of Vermont including as Trustee of the Vermont Veterans Home, and presently serves as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army from Vermont.

Lauren Frank

Lauren Frank is the Director of Bicentennial Events at Norwich University, and is the university’s liaison to the Bicentennial Stairs Committee. She began working at Norwich University in 2016 and was previously the Assistant Director of Advancement Events at Dartmouth College. She is a 2004 Wittenberg graduate with a BA in Business Management.

Dave Whaley ‘76

Dave Whaley is a 1976 graduate of Norwich. He has served the University for over 36 years, including the last 20 as the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations. He also serves as the Secretary to the Board of Trustees and Secretary of the Corporation.
