Discussion Guide: Decoding History: The Invisible Thread

Prepared for the Women Kicking Glass (Norwich Alumni) Book Club

1. Structural Evolution & Personal Growth
The narrative is intentionally broken into three distinct parts centered around Eliza’s life.

  • Discussion Question: How does this tripartite structure reflect Eliza’s internal evolution? As a group of women leaders, does this mirror the "phases" of a professional journey—from technical mastery to navigating institutional power, and finally, to defining a legacy?

2. The Nexus of Power & Institutional Integrity
The richest man in the world is the brother of the President of the United States.

  • Discussion Question: This dynamic creates a "shadow cabinet" effect. How does this relationship challenge the perception of democracy versus oligarchy? For those of us who have served in military or federal structures, how does a leader maintain personal integrity when the “real” power is hidden behind familial bonds?

3. The “Invisible” Professional
Eliza spends much of her life navigating and decoding information that others cannot—or will not—see.

  • Discussion Question: Historically, women have often been the "invisible threads" holding organizations together while others received the public credit. How does Eliza’s burden of "decoding" the world affect her ability to form personal relationships? Is her isolation a byproduct of her brilliance, or a strategic necessity?

4. Authenticity and the “Grit” of History
The Decoding History series blends documented historical milestones with speculative fiction.

  • Discussion Question: Which "real-world" historical events felt the most transformed by the narrative? How does Eliza’s story reflect the Norwich values of resilience and excellence in a world not yet built for her success?

5. The Ethics of Controlled Knowledge
Several characters hold information that could change the course of the world, choosing when to reveal or conceal the truth.

  • Discussion Question: Is there such a thing as a “noble lie” in Eliza’s journey? How do the characters’ motivations (personal gain vs. national security vs. moral truth) differ, and who did you find yourself trusting the most?

6. Foresight & The Future: A Mirror to Today
The novel looks forward thirty years into a future that feels increasingly plausible.

  • Discussion Question: Based on the current political and technological environment in the USA, how does this future-leaning narrative feel to you today? Given the current trajectory of wealth concentration and information warfare, do you believe the events of the novel “could happen”? What does the book suggest about our responsibility to guard the “invisible threads” of our democracy?

7. Atmosphere as a Character
The settings in this book—from clandestine meeting rooms to expansive historical backdrops—often feel like characters themselves.

  • Discussion Question: How did the specific locations influence the tension of the plot? Could Eliza’s story have happened anywhere else?

Author’s Closing Reflection
As we conclude, consider the concept of “The Thread.” The title suggests a connection that is hidden but unbreakable. Where in your own lives or careers have you found an "invisible thread" of support or resilience that others might have missed?
