What Can I Do To Help?

Norwich University 18-19 Buddy Check Day

Whether a classmate, veteran, friend, family member or colleague, there are many ways to support somebody you think may be struggling mentally or emotionally. Let them know the thoughts and feelings they have are valid and you are there to support them.

•    Listen without making judgements and concentrate on their needs at that moment.
•    Ask them what would help them.  
•    Reassure and provide practical information or resources.
•    Avoid confrontation.
•    Ask if there is someone they would like you to contact.


Avoid Saying:
 
“Stop harping on the negative, you just need to change your attitude.”
“Everyone feels that way sometimes.”
“You have the same illness as my (whoever).”
“Yes, we all feel a little crazy now and then.”


Avoid Doing: 
Criticizing, blaming, showing any form of hostility towards them.
Assuming things about them or their situation.
Being sarcastic or making jokes about their condition.
Patronizing them or saying anything condescending.  


If you sense something amiss, even if the person does not appear to be suicidal, it is important to direct them to resources to help them face mental health challenges and more.
