About Carlo D’Este and the Norwich University Military Writers’ Symposium
In 1996, D’Este joined W.E.B. Griffin and Ed Tracy in co-founding the William E. Colby Military Writers’ Symposium, now called the Norwich University Military Writers’ Symposium. A signature annual event of Norwich’s Peace and War Center, the symposium has brought some of the most prominent military, intelligence and international affairs writers of our time to central Vermont. A key component of the symposium is the William E. Colby Award, which recognizes a first work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a major contribution to the understanding of military history, intelligence operations or international affairs. The Colby Award winner receives a $5,000 honorarium provided through the generosity of the PMF and travels to the Pritzker Military Museum & Library (PMML) to present on the award topic.
The Carlo D’Este ’58 Military History Award, a $1,000 prize created in D’Este’s honor, is awarded annually at the symposium to an outstanding undergraduate senior who is pursuing a history or military history major.
In 2011, D’Este won the Lifetime Achievement Award in military writing from the PMML. The prize carries a $100,000 honorarium and recognizes a living author for a body of work that has profoundly enriched the public understanding of American military history.
