Charles H. Spooner, NU 1878

    • President of Norwich 1904-1915.
    • Significantly expanded campus facilities including the addition of Alumni Hall, the former Carnegie Hall, and the U.S. Weather Bureau (now Ainsworth Hall), and the heating plant.
    • Defended Norwich’s role in VT higher education after Carnegie Report which recommended merger with other colleges.

Ernest W. Gibson, Sr., NU 1894

    • Military Service: Veteran of the 1915 Mexican Border Crisis and World War I. Continued to serve in the Vermont Guard, rising to rank of colonel.

Brig Gen Hiram I. Bearss, USMC, NU 1898

    • Military Service: Marine Corps 1898-1919, served in Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and the Philippine-American War and World War I. Brigadier General in USMC.

William B. Mayo

    • Profession: Northfield physician from 1877 to 1930.
    • Responsible for creating VT county appointments to Norwich under a scholarship. This bolstered a foundering cadet population that declined after the Civil War.

MG Leonard F. Wing Sr, USA, NU 1914

    • Honorary degree 1938 and 1946; Trustee 1939-1946.
    • Profession: Vermont lawyer, civil servant in Rutland. President of Vermont Bar Association.
    • Military: A WWII veteran, he was the only National Guard general to command an Army Division, for the entire duration of WWII; Silver Star.

LTG Edward H. Brooks, USA, NU 1916

    • Honorary degree 1949 and 1955.
    • Military: Career Army officer, served in World War I and II in cavalry, field artillery and armor. During WWII he was commanding officer of the 11th Armored, 2nd Armored Division across Normandy, and the V Corps and VI Corps.

    • Military: 26th Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
    • At the Supreme Command Headquarters, he contributed to peace, democracy, and education in his native Thailand and in the Pacific Region. With the help of his leadership, a democratic system of government reestablished itself in Thailand after 2006.
