Presentation by Marty Suydam ’65 on his book,
Building Memories—Norwich University 1961 to 1965: A Collective Memoir

Norwich alumnus, Marty Suydam ’65 will discuss his book Building Memories: Norwich University 1961–1975, a collection of stories about Norwich’s buildings plus reminiscences from the 1960s.

Published in 2019, the book was inspired by “200 Things about Norwich,” the bicentennial history project featuring five years of weekly posts with info about Norwich’s people, accomplishments and little known facts. Written that same four-year period, this book is more than the author’s memoir. Marty describes the collection as a “collaborative memoir” involving contributions by many former cadets. Many stories required extensive research of Norwich archives for historical context, and this collection provides a historical record not found in other histories of Norwich.

“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.” – John F. Kennedy

Service above self has been a cornerstone value of Norwich University since its founding. As we enter our third century as an institution that produces principled leaders, Norwich and the Sullivan Museum and History Center are excited to announce a permanent exhibit is being created to honor our Norwich alumni that have been recognized for their acts of valor in service to the nation.

Sullivan Museum and History Center entranceThe Sullivan Museum & History Center has announced that this permanent exhibit is called “Norwich Valor.” A ribbon cutting ceremony during Homecoming 2020 launched this project to honor alumni for their acts of valor in service to the nation. The program included details about how this interactive exhibit will use cutting edge technology to bring these amazing stories of service above self in an immersive and engaging way.

Regimental Band's Bicentennial Concert

Regimental Band formation - NU Upper Parade GroundThe Norwich University Regimental Band, the nation's oldest collegiate band, proudly presented a bicentennial concert entitled "The Band: 200 Years in the Making."

Under the baton of Lt. Colonel Todd Edwards, the band performed many of the favorites heard by countless cadets through the decades. The concert also featured a composition written for the group by composer Carly Golladay, daughter of Kevin Gorman '74.

Formed by Captain Partridge in 1820, the regimental band has been an integral part of the daily life of cadets for a century, performing at formations, reviews and parades. They have represented Vermont at the inauguration of eight U.S. presidents. In March 2020, the band celebrated its centennial with a concert in New York City's Carnegie Hall.
